wall of windThe FIU Extreme Events Institute (EEI) partners with NASA and other agencies to produce real time predictions for storm surges as well as provide cutting edge research on hurricane predictions, impacts and adaptation strategies for building materials. EEI encompasses all of the severe weather capabilities of FIU under one umbrella organization and builds on the organizational strengths of existing centers like the International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC). The IHRC has extensive computation and data collection resources that are used to model storm surges, predict inland flooding, and analyze potential damage to the built environment. It is also home to the ‘Wall of Wind’ which is the largest and most powerful university research facility of its kind and capable of simulating a Category 5 hurricane.
